While the new Giulia and the sports version of the Giulia GT were being launched, studies were getting underway to find a variant to replace the Giulietta Spider. The first proposal was simply the Giulia GT by Bertone, which was shorter and without a roof. The prototype of this version was then modified by the Alfa Romeo Style Centre to design a new front end, using a design by Ernesto Cattoni, but the arrival of the Duetto by Pininfarina sealed the deal.
