In 1946 Piero Dusio, a famous industrialist from Turin, presented the Cisitalia D46, a single-seater with Fiat 1100-derived engine, designed for a single-brand championship. The car was a great success and all the best drivers of the time tried their hand at the wheel of the car.
In 1948 an evolution was presented, called D48, with the engine upgraded to 1200cc and a more aerodynamic body. Only one example of this model was built, chassis 036. The car entered the official team and was driven by Tazio Nuvolari at the Monaco GP and by Piero Taruffi at the Bari GP in 1948. The following year it was sold in Switzerland and would continue to race successfully for several years in the hands of local drivers.
